Why We Exist

We believe the book is always better than the movie. It's interesting that you still hear people using that phrase considering all of the technological and storytelling advancements that we have seen. Picture quality is continuing to get better and special effects have certainly taken a giant leap forward helping to make movies look more realistic or more fantastic. Movies are also starting to get made by a more diverse and growing group of people and there are whole educational institutions and a vast amount of resources devoted to making movies, yet people continue to say that the book is always better.

So what do books have that movies don’t? Quite a number of things actually, but the two most important differences have to do with imagination and time. Books are utterly personal to you. When you read a book your imagination creates the world that you are reading about. Movies are not personal to the viewer at all but rather the vision of the Director. This notion of not being personal to the viewer bleeds into the second difference, time. When you sit down to watch a movie, in general, you start and finish the movie in the span of two or three hours. Books are personal to you in terms of time in the sense that you can finish a book in one sitting, or you can put it down and come back to it when you feel inspired to do so.

Why is the difference between books and movies important to Livy Reads? It’s important because we believe that your own vision of the world is always better than someone else’s. We believe that although there is nothing wrong with entertainment, the world could use a little more self discovery. We believe that lives are enhanced when they are challenged rather than when they are spoon fed all the answers.

Livy Reads was founded with the belief that a future with more discovery, more creativity, more wonder, more unique views on the world, might be a little messy, but is fundamentally more exciting and will always be a step in the right direction.
